**Prerequisites:** None.

**Required permission:** None — every user can create their own API tokens. A token authenticates as you, so it can only do what your own account can do.

## Create a token

1. Click your avatar at the bottom of the sidebar → **Setting**.
1. Click the **API Tokens** tab.
1. Click **+**.
1. Enter a **Name** for the token (what it's for, e.g. *ERP integration*) and click **Create**.

The full token is shown exactly once, right after you create it — copy it now using the copy icon next to it. Once you navigate away, Tooling Metrics only shows a masked version (e.g. `tm_usr_ab12cd••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••`); there's no way to retrieve the full value again.

## Rename a token

1. On the **API Tokens** tab, click the edit icon on the token's row.
1. Update the **Name** and click **Update**.

Renaming only changes the label — it doesn't change the token's value or invalidate it.

## Delete a token

1. On the **API Tokens** tab, click the delete icon on the token's row.
1. Confirm the deletion.

Deleting a token immediately stops it from authenticating. This can't be undone — if something still needs it, create a new token and update that integration instead.

## Notes

- There's no way to regenerate or rotate an existing token's value — delete it and create a new one instead.
- For how a token is actually used to authenticate API requests, see [Authentication](https://support.toolingmetrics.com/en/api/authentication/).
