**Prerequisites:** The items to write off are in stock at a storage device, a machine, or a tool.

**Required permission:** Inventory → Scrap Lists — User or above. Admins can validate any scrap list; Managers and Users only the scrap lists they created.

## Create a scrap list

1. In the sidebar, click **Inventory → Scrap Lists** → **+ Create**.
1. Select the **Location Type** (Storage Device, Machine, or Tool) and the **Location Name** the items are leaving.
1. Click **⊕** to add scrap lines. For each line, select the **Item**, the location it is currently at, and the **Quantity** to write off.
1. Click **Mark as Todo**. The system checks availability at each location: if every line is covered, the list moves to **Ready**; if a line exceeds what's on hand, the list moves to **Waiting**. Correct the line, then click **Check Availability**.

## Validate

1. Physically retrieve the items from their locations and confirm they are present.
1. From **Ready**, click **Validate**. The quantities are permanently removed from on-hand stock and their cost is written off. Each serialized piece's condition is set to **Scrapped** and its cost to zero.

## Notes

- Scrap records are permanent and cannot be reversed. Ensure items are genuinely end-of-life before validating.
- A scrap list takes any item in stock at its location, whatever its condition. **For scrap** is a stock rule condition, not a piece's condition: it marks a storage location for items awaiting write-off, and the Inventory Scheduler drafts a scrap list when that location reaches its threshold. See [Stock Rules Reference](https://support.toolingmetrics.com/en/inventory/reference/stock-rules/).
- You don't set a serialized piece's condition before scrapping it. After a piece is registered, only validated documents and crossed service thresholds change its condition, and validating a scrap list is what sets **Scrapped**. See [Track tool condition](https://support.toolingmetrics.com/en/production/guides/track-tool-condition/).
