**Prerequisites:** None. Materials can be created without any other data in the system.

**Required permission:** Library → Materials — User or above; Engineering → Parts — User or above to assign a material to a part. Admins can edit any material; Managers and Users only the materials they created.

## Add a material

1. In the sidebar, click **Library → Materials**.
1. Click **+ Create** in the navigation bar.
1. Enter the material **Name** and optionally its **Standard** designation (e.g., *S 45C*).
1. Set the **ISO group** and **VDI 3323** classifications. These groups determine which cutting data recommendations and calculator defaults apply to this material.
1. Enter the **Hardness** value and unit (HB, HRC, or HV).
1. Click **Create**.

## Assign a material to a part

1. Open the **Part** you want to update.
1. Click **Edit** in the bottom toolbar.
1. In the **Material** field, search for and select the material.
1. Click **Update**.

## Notes

- The ISO and VDI 3323 groups are used by the machining calculator to filter applicable cutting conditions. Correct classification improves the accuracy of cutting data recommendations.
- Tooling Metrics ships with a preloaded material database. Search existing materials before creating a custom one to avoid duplicates.
