A **Machine** represents a CNC machine or machining center on the shopfloor. Every machine belongs to a Warehouse Access Point, which is what lets Tooling Metrics pick items and tools directly to it. Machines are built from one or more **Components** (spindle heads, turrets, or gang slides), each of which can hold tools in numbered **Tool Locations**.

## Fields

### Identity

| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| **Name** | Machine name (e.g., *VMC-01*). |
| **Designation** | The machine's identifying number. |
| **Builder** | Machine builder / manufacturer. |
| **Model** | Machine model name. |
| **Serial Number** | The machine's own serial number. |
| **Hour Rate** | Cost per hour of machine time, used in cost analytics. |
| **Target OEE** | The Overall Equipment Effectiveness you aim for on this machine, as a percentage (0–100). It is a reference value shown on the machine record and list, and available as a column in Analytics widgets; Tooling Metrics does not calculate the actual OEE. |
| **Warehouse Access Point** | Required. The WAP this machine belongs to — items and tools are picked and returned through it. |

## Components

Each machine has one or more **Components**, each with a **Type** — `Head`, `Turret`, or `Gang` — and a configured number of slots. Turret and gang components also carry **Interfaces**: the connection codes (ISO 13399) used to check tool assembly compatibility with that component. A Head component automatically gets one tool location ("Spindle head") when created.

## Tool crib

The **Tool Crib** tab lists every tool currently physically in the machine (picked or transferred there), with:

| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| **Tool ID / Name** | The Tool record. |
| **Pocket No.** | The pocket this tool is assigned to, if any. Click it to reassign — in the **Assign Slot Number** dialog, pick the **Machine Component** (head/turret/gang), enter the **Pocket No.**, and click **Update**. |
| **Rem. Life** | The tool's remaining life. |
| **Forecasted / On Hand** | Inventory-style quantities for the tool as a moveable object. |
| **Cost** | The tool's current cost. The table footer totals the cost of every tool on hand. |

Pocket numbers here are what match the T-codes in NC programs (slot 3 = T03). This slot assignment is its own record, separate from a Component's Tool Location definitions (which just say how many pockets exist) — nothing joins the two beyond matching numbers, so keep them in sync by convention. A tool's slot assignment is cleared automatically when a Return List moves it off the machine. See [Manage a tool crib](https://support.toolingmetrics.com/en/production/guides/manage-tool-crib/) and [Renumber tools for an NC program](https://support.toolingmetrics.com/en/production/guides/renumber-tools-for-nc-program/).

## Item list tab

Shows on-hand, incoming, and outgoing quantities for every item and tool stored at the machine, the same way any storage location does.
