# Check and scrap a worn piece

Check a mounted piece's condition and scrap a worn one so it's excluded from the next job.

**Prerequisites:** A tool has been used and returned, with a serialized piece (an insert or holder) that is worn out.
**Required permission:** Production → Tools — User or above (a User sees only the tools they created); Inventory → Scrap Lists — User or above.

Tooling Metrics tracks condition at two levels, and it's worth knowing which one you're looking at. The Condition of each **cutting edge** mounted in a tool (Uncut, Used, Pre-warning, Warning, Expired, Broken) is computed automatically from that edge's accumulated Usage Life — you already saw this update in [Record runtime](https://support.toolingmetrics.com/en/production/tutorials/record-runtime/). The condition of an individual mounted piece — a specific insert or holder tracked by serial number — lives on that piece's own **Serialized Item** record, and the stock moves you validate set it.

## Check a piece's condition

1. In the sidebar, click **Production → Tools** and open the tool.
1. On the **Items List** tab, click the list icon next to the insert or holder. Each piece is listed by **Serial Number** with its **Condition**.

A Serialized Item's own page shows its condition but has no edit form. You choose a condition by hand only when a serial number is first registered, on a Purchase Receipt line. After that, each validated move updates it: a pick onto a machine turns a **Brand new** piece **Used**, a Service Pick sets **Under service**, a Service Order receipt sets **Refurbished**, and a Scrap List sets **Scrapped**.

## Scrap a worn piece

1. In the sidebar, click **Inventory → Scrap Lists** → **+ Create**. Set **Location Type** to **Tool** and **Location Name** to the tool.
1. Click **⊕** to add a line for the worn item, set **Quantity to Scrap** to 1, and click **Mark as Todo**.
1. In the line's serial rows, select the worn piece by its **Serial Number**, then click **Validate**. See [Process a scrap list](https://support.toolingmetrics.com/en/inventory/guides/process-scrap-list/).

## What to expect

- The piece's condition is now **Scrapped**, and it is excluded from future picks automatically — it won't be offered as available stock for the next tool.
- If the piece is Serviceable and crosses a configured service threshold, its condition moves to **Need service** on its own, without anyone setting it manually.
- Each move is logged in the piece's **Moves History** with the condition it had at the time — this is what tool life benchmarking in Analytics is built on.

## Service orders

For a piece that can be reconditioned — reground, recoated, recalibrated — create a **Service Order** instead of scrapping it. This sends it to the service provider and tracks its return. See [Create a service order](https://support.toolingmetrics.com/en/purchasing/guides/create-service-order/).

## Production series complete

You've completed the full onboarding sequence: building a tool, picking its components, releasing and transferring it to a machine, returning it and recording runtime, and tracking condition. Your team now has a working system covering the complete tool lifecycle — from the product library and engineering through inventory, purchasing, and production.
