Renumber tools for an NC program

Reconcile tool numbers between the machine's tool crib and the job's operations before running the NC program.

Updated

Prerequisites: A job with operations assigned to tool assemblies, and a machine already assigned to that job.

Required permission: Engineering → Jobs — User or above to renumber from the job (Admins on any job; Managers and Users only on the jobs they created); or Production → Machines — User or above to set pocket numbers from the machine’s Tool Crib.

Tool numbers (T-codes) have to match on both sides: the job’s operations reference a T-code for each tool, and the machine’s tool crib assigns a slot number to each physical tool. If the crib changes after the setup sheet was printed — tools swapped, slots reused — the two drift apart and the NC program calls the wrong tool unless they’re reconciled. Tooling Metrics handles this from whichever side is authoritative for the situation.

From Engineering — match the job’s operations to the crib

Section titled “From Engineering — match the job’s operations to the crib”

Use this when the machine is already loaded and you want the job’s T-codes to follow it.

  1. Open the job from Engineering → Jobs (or from its project under Engineering → Projects, on the Process tab).
  2. Open the job’s Tool List tab and click Renumber below the list. The button appears only while the job is not yet active or archived. This always works against the crib of the machine already assigned to the job — there’s no separate machine-selection step.
  3. Review the suggested tool number for each tool assembly used in the job, ranked by whether a matching tool is already loaded in the machine, then by operation order. A row is highlighted if its suggested number differs from what’s currently on the operations.
  4. Adjust any value directly if needed, then click Renumber to apply the numbers across all operations that use each assembly.
  5. Regenerate the setup sheet so the operator sees the updated numbers.

See the full ranking rules in Renumber Tools (Engineering).

From Production — match the crib to the job

Section titled “From Production — match the crib to the job”

Use this when you’re loading the machine fresh and the job’s T-codes are what should drive slot assignment.

  1. Open the job’s setup sheet or Tool List and note the T-code for each tool.
  2. In Production → Machines, open the machine and go to the Tool Crib tab.
  3. For each tool, click its slot number and set it to match the job’s T-code. See Manage a tool crib.
  • If the same tool assembly is used in more than one operation, all of those operations share one slot number — renumbering updates them together.
  • Whichever side you renumber from, re-check the setup sheet and the NC program against the machine before running the job.
