Set up a storage device

Create a cabinet or rack and configure its modules and storage locations.

Updated

Prerequisites: A warehouse exists.
Required permission: Admin Center access (organization owner or a member of the <org-name>-admins group).

A Storage Device is a physical cabinet, drawer unit, rack, or shelf in your warehouse. Tooling Metrics models it as a 3D grid of Storage Modules, each divided into Storage Locations. Every location gets a unique address, making it possible to guide operators to exact positions during pick and restock operations.

In this tutorial you will create two storage devices — a vertical pull-out cabinet for complete assembled tools, and a drawer cabinet for small items, inserts, and holders. Together they show the two module layouts you’ll use for most devices: a uniform grid, and a cabinet where each drawer splits into different-sized locations.

  1. In the admin sidebar, click Storage Devices → + Create.
  2. Enter the Name: Tool Vertical Pull-out Cabinet.
  3. Select the Warehouse Access Point it belongs to (create one first if needed — see Configure a warehouse access point, then come back).
  4. Set the Type to Manual, the Up Direction to X, and the X, Y Coordinate to 0, 0.
  5. Click Create.
  6. Repeat to create a second device named Tool Drawer Cabinet, on the same Warehouse Access Point, with Up Direction Z and X, Y Coordinate 860, 235.

Setup is a one-time batch action per device — it’s only available while the device has no modules yet.

  1. Open the storage device and click Setup in the tab bar. The Setup Storage Modules and Locations dialog opens.
  2. Click the gear icon on Module 1 to expand its configuration.
  3. Set the module type and dimensions. For a standard 5-column × 7-row grid module:
    • Module type: Grid
    • No. locations in X: 5 | Gap X: 20 mm | Default X dimension: 340 mm
    • No. locations in Y: 7 | Gap Y: 5 mm | Default Y dimension: 100 mm
  4. Apply the same configuration to Modules 2–6.
  5. Click + New Storage Module to add Modules 7 and 8. Use the same X-axis values but set No. locations in Y to 4 and Default Y dimension to 163 mm.
  6. Adjust the Gap and Height values for each module to match the physical cabinet spacing.
  7. Click Setup to generate all modules and locations.

Tool drawer cabinet: mixed location sizes per drawer

Section titled “Tool drawer cabinet: mixed location sizes per drawer”

A cabinet doesn’t have to be one uniform grid — each drawer (module) can split into a different number and size of locations. Open this device’s Setup dialog and configure five drawers from this table:

Module Direction Module Gap Module Dimension Location Dimensions (per row)
Drawer 1 X 25 300 600 · 150,150,300
Drawer 2 X 25 200 150,150,300 · 150,150,150,150 · 150,150,75,75,75,75
Drawer 3 Y 25 100 150,150,150,150 (×2) · 75,75,75,75,75,75,75,75 (×2)
Drawer 4 Y 25 100 150,150,150,150 · 75,75,75,75,75,75,75,75 (×3)
Drawer 5 X 0 50 150,75,75,75,75,75,75 (×8) · 150,150,150,150 (×4)

Each row under “Location Dimensions” is one shelf within that drawer — read left to right as the width, in mm, of each location on that shelf. Click Setup to generate all modules and locations once both devices are configured.

After setup completes, click the Reload icon in the CAD toolbar to render each storage device’s 3D model. The model shows the physical layout of every location, matching what operators see when picking tools.

The storage device now has a full set of addressable locations. Each location has a unique identifier (e.g., A1-M1-R1-C1 — device, module, row, column) that appears in pick lists and restock instructions.

Configure a warehouse access point — define the physical zone where operators interact with this storage device.
