How to add and manage materials

Add workpiece materials to the Library and assign ISO/VDI3323 classifications.

Prerequisites: None. Materials can be created without any other data in the system.

Required permission: Library → Materials — User or above; Engineering → Parts — User or above to assign a material to a part. Admins can edit any material; Managers and Users only the materials they created.

Add a material

Section titled “Add a material”
  1. In the sidebar, click Library → Materials.
  2. Click + Create in the navigation bar.
  3. Enter the material Name and optionally its Standard designation (e.g., S 45C).
  4. Set the ISO group and VDI 3323 classifications. These groups determine which cutting data recommendations and calculator defaults apply to this material.
  5. Enter the Hardness value and unit (HB, HRC, or HV).
  6. Click Create.

Assign a material to a part

Section titled “Assign a material to a part”
  1. Open the Part you want to update.
  2. Click Edit in the bottom toolbar.
  3. In the Material field, search for and select the material.
  4. Click Update.

Notes

Section titled “Notes”
  • The ISO and VDI 3323 groups are used by the machining calculator to filter applicable cutting conditions. Correct classification improves the accuracy of cutting data recommendations.
  • Tooling Metrics ships with a preloaded material database. Search existing materials before creating a custom one to avoid duplicates.
