Currencies

Currency records — ISO code, format, and the related Exchange Rate resource.

Updated

Currencies define the foreign currencies your organization transacts in. All purchase orders and service orders that use a non-base currency reference a currency record for exchange rate conversion.

Field Description
ISO Code Three-letter ISO 4217 currency code (e.g., USD, EUR, JPY). Must be a recognized code and unique within the organization (case-insensitive).
Name Human-readable currency name (e.g., US Dollar, Euro). Maximum 32 characters.
Symbol Currency symbol displayed on order documents and the UI (e.g., $, €, ¥). Maximum 6 characters.
Symbol Position Whether the symbol appears before ($100) or after (100€) the amount.
Decimal Places Number of decimal digits shown for amounts in this currency (0–3). Use 0 for currencies with no minor unit (e.g., JPY).
Number Format How amounts are formatted: dot decimal (1,234.56), comma decimal (1.234,56), space + dot (1 234.56), space + comma (1 234,56), no separator + dot (1234.56), no separator + comma (1234,56).

Exchange Rate is not a field on the Currency record — see Exchange rates below.

The base currency is the organization’s own reference currency (Preferences → Regional settings → Currency), set to USD by default when the organization is created and changeable to any currency already added to the organization. All monetary values stored internally use the base currency. A currency’s rate against the base currency is fixed at 1 for the base currency itself, and cannot be edited.

The base currency’s page has no Delete button, so it can’t be deleted from the UI. Change the base currency first if you need to remove it.

Each non-base currency has its own history of Exchange Rate entries, managed as a separate resource nested under the currency (not part of the currency’s create/edit form):

Field Description
Date The date this rate takes effect.
Rate Conversion rate to the organization’s base currency. Must be greater than 0.

A currency’s current rate is the most recent Exchange Rate entry with a date on or before today. If no Exchange Rate has been entered yet, the currency has no current rate. It can still be selected on a vendor or purchase order form in the meantime, but a purchase order in that currency can’t be confirmed until the currency has a rate dated on or before the confirmation date. Add a rate before relying on a newly added currency for a real order.

Exchange rates are not fetched automatically and must be entered manually. A purchase order doesn’t store a copy of the rate: whenever its prices are converted to the base currency, Tooling Metrics looks up the most recent rate dated on or before the order’s confirmation date. Adding a rate with a newer date doesn’t affect orders confirmed earlier, but adding or editing a rate with an earlier date can change the rate used for orders confirmed on or after that date.
